Not So Bad Backman

John Dellapina at The Blueshirts Blog, reports that the citicisms of Christian Backman's lack of discipline may be premature...

"Hold off on the Ozolinsh/Malik treatment for Christian Backman. He actually took one for the team last night - or, more accurately, the team elected him to take one for it.

Backman wasn’t even on the ice when referees Bill McCreary and Gord Dwyer detected a holding penalty just before Erik Cole scored to cut it to 3-2 in the third period. But the two officials who earlier had somehow found nothing wrong with Tuomo Ruutu leaping, elbow-first into Michal Rozsival even though the puck was nowhere nearby, had no idea who committed the holding penalty they called.

So they wandered over to the Rangers’ bench and asked who the right defenseman was on the play. Several alert Rangers, realizing that important penalty-killer Blair Betts was guilty of the infraction, quickly yelled: “Backman.” And one of the newest Rangers dutifully skated across the ice to serve a penalty committed while he was on the bench, allowing Betts to help kill it."

...I wonder if the Ranger players who yelled Backman's named did it because they already knew he sucked and would be helping the team by having him in the penalty box or if it was just some new guy hazing.

...I've got to get a better picture of Backman.

Totally agree that he doesn't deserve the treatment he gets. Anyone who boos Malik tomorrow deserves to be kicked out of MSG. Not sure I agree that he plays great defensive hockey, but he has been solid lately.
