Rangers Not Getting Pick for Cherepanov's Death

Larry Brooks at the New York Post says that the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement would have to be amended in order for the Rangers to be awarded the compensatory pick they are seeking for the loss of Alexei Cherepanov.

Apparently, Article 8.3 (b) of the CBA explains that compensatory picks are meant as protection for teams whose unsigned first-round selections are eligible to either go back into the draft or become free agents.

And because Cherepanov was listed as a "defected player" on the NHL roster status report, his unsigned rights would have belonged to the Rangers beyond this season and into the foreseeable future. Meaning he would not have been eligible to re-enter the draft or to become a free agent.

So bottom line, no pick for the Rangers.

...despite a little bad PR, business wise its was smart to inquire.

I am glad the rangers aren't getting a pick.
The Cherepanov and Bourdon accidents are tragic, for their families and the NHL. The question is whether these accidents can be prevented in the future. Maybe better testing on the NHL's part for the Cherepanov situation and educating the players (youngsters) on dangerous activities such as motorcycle etc... Just seems like more should/can be done to prevent tragedies like these from occuring in the future.... and it is ridiculous how the Rangers are seeking another pick to replace Cherepanov. My thoughts. http://jib-sports-culture.blogspot.com/2008/11/tragedy-for-promising-rookies.html
