Mid-Year Report Card

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes gives his mid-season report card...

A---Marc Staal, Ryan Callahan
B-plus---Markus Naslund, Nik Zherdev, Steve Valiquette

B---Henrik Lundqvist, Paul Mara, Dan Girardi, Blair Betts. (Update: Maybe a shade too hard on Henrik; certainly a A in shootouts and for the early part of the season, but a B for the rest. So, I'll revise to a B-plus.
B-minus---Nigel Dawes
C---Chris Drury, Lauri Korpikoski, Colton Orr, Fredrik Sjostrom, coach Tom Renneyx
C-minus---Scott Gomez, Brandon Dubinsky, Michal Rozsival, Aaron Voros
D to D-minus---Wade Redden, Dmitri Kalinin
Incomplete---Petr Prucha, Corey Potter, Dan Fritsche

...i think Zipay was too kind to Redden and Kalinin.

Redden gets a freakin F!

B- for Dawes? I think a C or C- is more appropriate.

Henrik is the best goalie in the league. When you put mediocre D in front of him s%$te happens. Oh well. Redden has been poor the whole season...but I'm hoping he's a last-half-of-the-season-guy who knows about crunch time and playoffs.

Step up!!

It's been interesting (though it could be potentially troubling) to see that Dawes has been a whipping boy for more and more Rangers fans this year. He's been top 3 on the team in shooting percentage, +/- and game winning goals. Last year he had the highest +/- on the team and he doesn't get the call every game. If anything you should love that this kid is less than $600,000 against the cap. With guys like Prucha, Korpo, Voros and RISSMILLER all bringing in over a million this year, Dawes should be considered a steal! Yes it's frustrating to watch at times because he gets chances and cashes in occasionally but again there's an upside....he gets chances! I suppose it's all about expectations but on this team with bloated salaries and downright embarrassing play at times it's hard to justify constantly coming down on a young fast 3rd line winger with hands who quietly does his part. The real disappointment will be if he comes back to MSG in a different sweater to undress your 5 million dollar defensemen. Pronger might be able to tell you a bit about how that feels.
