Avery Needs to Be Smarter

Dan Rosen at NHL.com says for the Rangers to beat Capitals Sean Avery is going to have to be a smarter player...

"Tortorella has talked a lot about Avery being an effective player for the Rangers when he's not getting caught up in all the hoopla he causes by stirring things up in front of the net.

He stayed disciplined and was effective in Games 1 and 2, but lost his cool in Game 3. Tortorella said he and Avery discussed the matter Tuesday morning."

....i have to disagree with Rosen here. Avery IS an effective player when he's stirring things up in front of the net. He's not a goal scorer, so going hard to the net and mixing things up is the way he contributes to this team. And he does it very effectively.

...when Avery gets into trouble is when he starts getting frustrated (mostly by the refs ignoring blantant penalties on him) and he starts taking stupid penalties of his own.

youre right he is an effective player, but the antics he showed in game 3 were ridiculous. Now don't get me wrong I am an Avery fanatic and have been on his bandwagon ever since he became a blueshirt but with things like punching varlamov in the head is just DUMB. A) Varlamov doesn't even speak english so it was like listening to a squeaky wheel. B)The ref was standing right behind him. Did he really think he was gonna get away with it? Avery needs to skate hard, finish EVERY check, talk a lot of trash, and get the caps to take penalties. not him.
