Montoya Earns Shutout in NHL Debut

Former Ranger 2004 first round pick Al Montoya made 23 saves to earn a shutout in his NHL debut for the Pheonix Coyotes during a 3-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night. Game recap here.

Last year, the Rangers traded Montoya along with Marcel Hossa to Phoenix for Fredrick Sjostrom, Josh Gratton and goaltender David Leneveu.

...while Montoya had no future with the Rangers, the concern with the trade was that Sather sold Montoya when his price was at his lowest. With last night's performance maybe Sather should have held out until Montoya's stock started to rise again.

I thought part of the deal is the Rangers were can get a 2009 conditional pick from Phoenix from Montoya's play...but I am not sure what that entails.

In other news...the Devils lost 6-1. Did the Devils bring their C game to the Garden the other night or did the Rangers play really well? We'll find out tonight...

There is now way you can second guess Sather on this one. Montoya's play had sharply declined last season before the trade, without explanation. Also, while he might have gotten a shutout in his first NHL start, when you look a little deeper, it isn't what it seems. The Avalanche are the second worst team in the league, next to the Islanders. Also, take a look at Montoya's stats this year in the AHL...terrible! He is 7-17-2 with a .885 save percentage and a 3.23 GAA. Looks like we were able to salvage some kind of value for Montoya and got a player like Sjostrom.
