Prospal a Bargain, Not So Much with Kotalik

Wes Goldstein at CBS Sports looks at the at the bargains and busts from the free agent and trade market during the offseason...

4. Vaclav Prospal: The Rangers got a great deal because Tampa Bay bought Prospal out of the final three years of his $14 million contract, and they signed him in August for just over $1 million. Prospal has put up very solid numbers, and instead of butting heads with coach John Tortorella as he did with the Lightning, he has become the Rangers' second-best player behind Marian Gaborik and is also an alternate captain.

...not so sure Prospal's such a bargain anymore.

3. Ales Kotalik: Lots of Rangers free-agent signings have drawn snickers over the years, and Kotalik's $9 million over three years was among them. New York seemed destined for the last laugh when the former Sabres forward had a great start along with the rest of the team. Kotalik had a big impact on the power play early, but has gone stone cold and without a goal for more than a month.

...no idea what happened here. I pointed to Kotalik's shot from the point on the power play as the single most important reason for the extra man turn around this season. Then all of a sudden nothing. I barely even notice him on the ice anymore. Hope Torts hasn't messed with his head.

Several sites are reporting that Matt Gilroy has been sent to Hartford and that Heikkenan is staying with the big club.

Why sign Kotalik for 9 million when they could have just kept Zherdev....his 55 points last year would have been helpful this year, even with his up and down play. Torts and Sather are a joke

Kotalik's specialty: rushed slap shots wide of the net. That's all he does, other than look like he doesn't care.
