Rangers Looking for 7th Defenseman

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes says that according to executives with two NHL teams Glen Sather has been contacting other clubs about defensive help.

Zipay adds that players the Rangers apparently have interest in will be unrestricted free agents in June with affordable salaries including Florida’s Dennis Seidenberg, Atlanta’s Christoph Schubert, Minnesota’s Shane Hnidy, Toronto’s Garnet Exelby and Nashville’s Francis Bouillon.

...i'm surprised it took this long for the Rangers to seriously consider bringing in a 7th defenseman. Especially with two rookies on the blueline. Assuming salary cap concerns were the main reason behind them holding off.

...all of the players mentioned have their pluses and minuses, so I really don't have a favorite.

Zipay also reports that the Rangers are losing their ECHL affiliate the Charlotte Checkers.

Even though he's only played a few games, I thought Heikkinen looked more comfortable than Gilroy. Maybe Heikkinen should be the 6/7thth defenseman and some rental veteran should be the other 6/7th. Then Gilroy could hone his game in Hartford. Other than his skating, Gilroy seems pretty green to me. Thoughts?

They do need a shutdown, veteran defenseman, but why not unload some dead weight to clear cap space, and get Volchenkov or Hamhuis this summer, when both will be free agents? I doubt either the Sens or Preds would part with either of them now, and either of them would be great.

I can see Seidenberg or Schubert; seem like relatively balanced players. Hnidy and Exelby would add some grit, but not so much defensively and nothing offensively. Bouillon? Who the f- is Bouillon? Just looked him up and I see 5'8"@196 - this dude plays in the NHL?. Not sure that is what we need. My expectations for a 7th D are not that high, but we should pick up someone who brings something to the table. Don't really need more useless contracts. Wonder what Strudwick or Mara are up to these days?

Curious what people think about Witt. I know he's not worth the 3mil cap hit next year, but he is a crease-clearing veteran D-man, which is all something NYR could use more of this year.

Anyone think the Fishsticks would be silly enough to recall him? I'd take that for a $1.5Mil cap hit.
