Boogaard: Teams Will Not Take Advantage of Rangers Players

John Shipley at the Pioneer Press spoke with Derek Boogaard about enforcers still being valued in the NHL and said this about the his role with the Rangers...

"You saw that there were some teams taking advantage of guys in New York; you could see that just watching highlights," he said. "That probably won't be happening as much now."

...while I'm still not a fan of the contract there is no denying the importance of having a guy like Boogaard in the lineup, hopefully, every night.

This is great to hear. Now let's hope the Boogeyman shows up ready to walk the walk. It's no secret were offensively challenged. If Boogard can be a distraction to the other team, and fire up our guys, maybe some close ones go the other way.

I like Boogard but I also think that when we play outside our division there may be some room not to dress him and call up a prospect, maybe against the Panthers and such.

"...when we play outside our division there may be some room not to dress him..."

I think that's ok. As long as he wages all_out_war against teams in the Atlantic and Northeast he can sit to make room for the young guns when they're out West, etc.

Funny, that was what was said last year about Brashear...

When we have a team scared of taking penalties, adding a goon to play six minutes a night 60 nights a season is pointless. And at that price ...

Who was the Blackhawks' goon this year, or Pittsburghs' last year, or Detroits' the year before that? But hey, did Torts also want Boogaard to protect his latest version of Martin St. Louis ala Zuccarello-Aasen?

Great points, everybody.
I definitely want the guy to earn his keep, but I like the idea of not always dressing him. Seems like Sather is more of an enforcer guy than Tortorella.
I hear you wonderin', the enforcer is not a required tool; all the more reason to let him sit sometimes to make room for others to skate. I hope to be glad to have him in some games against the east.
In any case, the Rangers need to have their game in place.

Bring on Zuccarello-Aasen (MZA) !

A guy like Boogaard will hopefully not only help us this year, but leading into the following year also. If any free agent goal scorer sees Gaborik or any other Rangers skill players getting pummelled like they did last year, you've got to think that they would be thinking twice about signing with the Rangers. If you are going to mess with our top guys, somebody has got to make you pay the price. Ag_blue is right, Sather seems to get that, lets hope Torts listens too.

I love this. Like I've mentioned I liked how Sather said he signed Boogaard to protect Hank. I'm so pumped to see this guy fight. HAVE YOU SEEN HIM ON YOUTUBE?! He never loses a fight!

Maybe Sather wants to teach Shelley a lesson for hopping over to Philly...

Does anyone know if Boogaard was assigned a number yet? I know his #24 is taken by Callie already.
