Boogaard Worst Signing of the Off-season

Greg Wyshyski at Puck Daddy reports every agent has panned the Derek Boogaard signing as the worst of the summer so far.

"They agreed that 4 years and $6.5 million for a player with both a history of concussions and a decline in fighting totals was a confusing move. They also felt that the Rangers, more than any other team, were a franchise without a plan during this summer's Frenzy."

...so they're saying Sather's a genius.

...all kidding aside that's some pretty rough talk.

It wouldn't be summer time without some people saying we made "the worst signing of the year". I've said it before but, if the worst thing that happens to us is giving an enforcer 1 year and 600Kish a year too much, I'll take it.

The Rangers had a plan. watch the young players develop and back up/ protect Hank. Mission accomplished. The problem with that article is it has agents, who are more than mildly biased, speaking on the Free agency period. The bottom lin is this, their player gets more money, they get more money.

boogaards contract is 2 years too long not 1 year.

Look, I can understand the sheer hatred of this contract. I think we could have dropped the price and still had a shot for Boogaard. I think we should have signed Konopka instead. But the season hasn't even begun yet. Shelley came into the roster with zero goals in two seasons. But it was Tortorella's system and the players within it that brought the best out of that fourth line. Much of you forget, there's still 2/3 of that line together. I'm not saying to expect great things from Boogaard. But I surely didn't expect anything when Shelley arrived on the team. I'm just saying, lets reserve our judgement for after the season begins. Boogaard could amaze us. I don't find it likely, but stranger has happened.

its not so much the goals shelley vs boogaard. its just effective ice time. keepimg puck in other teams zone and somewhat defensively responsible.

case in point on someone who killed us on the ice - not so nmmuch salary wise but all other ways - ryan hollweg

I get what you're saying. I was using the whole goals thing as just a reference point. Either way, we still don't know whats gonna happen with Boogaard until he steps on the ice, in the NY Rangers uniform, under Tortorella's tutelage (or whatever you'd like to call it). We can't predict the future.

This conversation is crazy!!!!! We are talking about a 4th line enforcer....His job is to be in the lineup and defend Hank, Gaborik, and energize the team with a fight when we need momentum, that is it!!!!

The fact that our 4th line was the best on the ice for the last 2 1/2 weeks against the worst teams in the NHL is not a positive for the Rangers, it is proof that this team needs talent....hopefully provided by some of the kids we have in hartford.

A fourth line enforcer making $1.6 million for the next four years.

so if he was making 1.1 million you wouldn't be complaining? I mean seriously what the hell is 600k more. Some of you guys gotta stop looking for things to cry about. In the Atlantic you need an enforcer, that's the bottom line. A main reason why his fight totals went down was due to guys not wanting to fight him. He KO gilles, beat shelly, goadard already... He also deliverers some nasty hits, something shelly didn't do much of ... once he has his first fight at the garden everyones going to forget the extra 600k and taunting the islander fans that the boogey man is a ranger.

its not just the extra 600 k. its the extra 2 yrs. and he sits about 30 games/ yr. and plays 5 minutes a game. and other than fighting is ineffective in rest of game. and i'm not talking goals and assts.

with him on 4th line torts will be very hesitant to play that line to the detriment of the rest of the forwards having to play more minutes than they should

so the 600 k extra is just part of the issues i have with bringing boogaard in

Okay, so he gets paid 1.6. I understand everyones initial frustration. But when you hear fans stubbornly criticize the Ranger organization for "gooning it up" by getting Shelly, Prust, Brashear and the few late round picks in the '10 draft, it shows how soft the fanbase and team has been for the past couple of years. "Gooning it up?" We're goons for trying to put toughness on the ice? We have so far a good mix of talent coming into the upcoming season.

Is it bad to two veteran bangers to give the team confidence? There was nothing that eased my mind more than seeing Prust and Shelly on that ice in the final game last year. there was a certain confidence knowing that you have tough guys you know who will be there for their teammates all out? Could you say that in the past two to three postseasons?

We paid for a big 6-8, 2 and some change body to our soft club. Other teams are getting tougher and tougher. Did we bit against ourselves? Maybe. But with a gu like that you have to take a chance. And this thing about he adds nothing else, that's far from the truth. The can skate and handle the puck and is a much better player than Shelly. So the question fo him offering the same level of intensity and energy has been from Boogy before. Ex. game 5 or 6 against anaheim in 2007 playoffs. The rangers have the young talent and future FA talent coming in ,now they need to add the toughness(no more pesky players, Avery, Cally, Orr) to make the rangers a dangerous team. And when I say toughness and dangerous I don't mean just fighting, I mean a team where the opposition knows they have to play that much harder to win.

Its hard to understand the terminology "worst signing" when you factor into the equation it's only 1.6M and for the best fighter in the league. You do expect to pay for the best sometimes, regardless of the returns. The team as a whole is soft, especially on the blue line and Hank does need to be protected. It was getting brutal out there.

time will tell - i disagree that he is better as a player than shelley

He is better than Shelly. Now let's see if he can bring that same energy that Shelly had last season.

again i disagree that boogaard as a hockey player is better than shelley. it is the other way around. foighting is just a part of the puzzle. when boogaard gets 5 minutes or less per game and sits at least 30 games - the proof will be there
