Demitra Looking to Join Rangers?

From Inside Pittsburgh Sports...

Pavel Demitra has two lucrative offers in KHL but is looking to join the New York Rangers and close friend Marian Gaborik. #NHLFA.less than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

....no, please God no. If Sather were to bring in Demitra (by the way it's Pavol not Pavel) it would fly in the face of everything he's been preaching this summer.

...not sure the validity of this report anyway as it's coming from a Pittsburgh sports outlet and the news has nothing to do with Pittsburgh.

A 1 yr contract at a bargain price I'd take him. Kind of like what we gave Prospal last year.

Here is my take: unless you are going to land a game changer (like IK) do not waste the money... let the kids (Grachev, Byers, etc.) come up and get some experiece and see if they are ready to make the jump. I do not think there is a serious liklihood of stunting the growth of these players by rushing them into service. The coaches are well aware of what these kids can handle.

Also, the other reason I promote a move like IK is that it only costs money. Prospects and picks do not have to be shipped to another team to make this possible. I am keenly aware of the cap and the problems that huge contracts can cause but lets face facts... this team will NEVER bottom out in the way that Pitt and Chicago did in order to land top picks. Therefore, we need to add top level talent through FA while our own crop of prospects pan out. With the potential opportunity to park Redden in Hartford, potentially trading Roscival and have Drury coming off the books in a few years, the cap noose will loosen for a move like IK. But unless it is that kind of top level talent, don't waste the cash.

Selfishly, I think going hard after a player like IK would make this team a much more entertaining team to watch. We might not win the cup but it would be a more exciting brand of hockey while allowing our potential studs (Grachev, Stepan, Kreider, etc.) the opportunity to participate or develop as required.

Not, at least, exploring the talent acquisition of a player like IK would be a mistake. That said, a player like Demitra (clearly on the downside of his career) is one on which I would pass.

washed up, beat up and overpaid.

$4 million got the canucks 16pts in 28 games last year with 3 goals. put that together with a rotator cuff problem and we're talking about what i just said.

washed up, beat up and overpaid.

he would be overpaid at even 1 million with 1 million in incentives.

no thank you.

Maybe last year I would have snagged him, or even would have got him for Higgens and Kotalik, etc. But not now for 2010-11.

I like our current direction of finishing another year looking for a top 10 draft pick. Let the kids earn some service time and get acclimated to the NHL. Slats can't handle the FA market so why waste the time signing old farts who didn't want to play here in their prime.

If they could sign him for 1 year at 1 mil, I'd take him. He's had experience with Gaborik, and aside from the injury last season, is a proven centerman, who hasn't scored under 45 points since 1997-1998. Im sure the team is looking into it, but the only way to go about this is to put a bargain basement contract on the board, and if he decides not to accept it, let him walk. Don't sacrifice the cap space for someone whose age and body are working against him.
