Gagne to Tampa

From Philadelphia Daily News Flyers beat writer...

Flyers source confirms Simon Gagne has indeed been traded to Tampa Bay. Waiting to hear on the return.less than a minute ago via web

Rumors are Tampa sending back goaltender Mike Smith and prospects.

...only posted this because Rangers had been linked to Gagne. While both are very talented players, very happy to see Kovalchuk and Gagne signing someplace else.

Tampa Bay is gonna be tough to defend next season. Lecavalier, St. Louis, Stamkos, Malone, and now Gagne.

...building a team around a number one Draft Choice! All the Rangers fans who want the Rangers to tank should join the Tampa bandwagon.

its not a question of wanting the team to tank. BUT its far better to get top 5 or top 7 pick than be middle of the pack again. this team needs a lot of help and the next batch of kids - stepan, kreider etc are not ready to help yet. plus don't want a cap killing long term deal just to finish 8th or 9th in the east

Kevin,
I understand this is a NYR blog, but please keep posting these updates on where players are going. Gagne going to TB does impact the Rangers, and their fans, because that's a few more times per year we won't have to worry about defending him. Knowing what is going on with our team is important, but keeping up with the competition is just as important.
Keep up the good work.

Happy to see Kovalchuk signing with the Devils at an incredibly reasonable cap hit? He's going to score a lot of goals for that team and dent the cap less than the Rangers' albatrosses do.

the so called albatrosses have only 2 yrs left with exception of the real albatross in redden for 4 yrs. and he won't be hitting our cap for more than 2 yrs with amnesty buyout or ahl in his future.

so hard to compare a 2 yr cap hit to a 10 or 17 yr cap hit

LI Joe,
The Kovalchuk contract is only a $6 million cap hit and is effectively an 11 year deal. Kovalchuk will be 38 then and will have his salary reduced to 750k and then 550k the rest of the way. At that point, he'd probably retire and/or accept an assignment to the KHL, coming off the salary cap books. It's a perfectly reasonable contract and cap hit. In 10 years, $6 might be what mid-range player makes with the current rate of salary inflation. So it's pretty easy to compare Kovie's contract to the Rangers' albatrosses. For less money per year, he's likely to contribute much more than say a Drury.

my point is one contract is for 2 more yrs the other is 11 (17 down to 11). one team cheated the cap by about 4 million per yr. the rangers have to live with the 2 more yrs because they did not cheat the cap;

so again can't compare a 2 yr deal remaining with a 11 yr deal that cheated the cap. kovy is not a 6 mm a yr player.

in kovys 3rd and later yrs there is no cntract hitting our caps to compare except henrik and gabby (redden won't be hitting our cap by then)

and kovy is likely to contribute more than 99% of the league not just drury.

sather should have been smart enough to add a few yrs at minimum salary to rozy, redden, gomez and drury. he was not smart enough to or chose not to cheat the cap.
