Just When I Thought Sather Was Getting It

Earlier today when I was posting the free agent signings I was pretty excited that the Rangers were able to get a backup goaltender and re-sign Erik Christensen pretty cheap.

And after seeing Sather smartly not try to match the Flyers ridiculous three-year $3.3 million contract offer for Jody Shelley, I was convinced that the Rangers President and GM had changed his ways.

But as always, Glen reminds us why we hate him so much by giving Derek Boogaard a 4-year $6.5 million contract. I know with Shelley headed to Philly the team needed an enforcer and I have nothing against Boogaard as I think he will fill the roll quite nicely but $1.625 million per when the Rangers are in salary cap hell?

Nice to see Sather come back to his senses by bring Vinny Prospal back for just $1 million plus bonus incentives. Not entirely on board with re-signing Prospal as I would have rather they used his money and the $600,000 per year they overpaid for Boogaard to sweeten the offer to get Colby Armstrong, who unfortunately signed with Maple Leafs for 3-years, $9 million.

Rangers apparently talking with LA's Frolov.

I bang on Sather a bit but at least he wasn't stupid enough to bring Jokinen back. He should be well received back in Calgary.

good, now if we get rid of Avery we might have enough money to get Frolov. Then we can call it a day and just let the kids play.

Why did you think Sather was "getting it?"

because he said he wants to keep the kids?

Sather has done nothing to make anyone think he knows what he is doing, or even that he is paying attention.

he got lucky with Jagr and later, Gaborik, being dropped into his lap, and other than that he has done NOTHING but make bad signings and bad trades.

I love when he gets credit for a trade getting rid of Gomez, when he set himself up for that trade by signing Gomez to a ridiculous contract in the first place.

The only things he has done of any value are getting rid of ridiculous contracts Gomez, Kotalik, and Higgins.

Look at the absurd chain of events starting with letting Orr go last year, replacing him with Brashear, a disaster, then replacing Brashear with Shelley, who was actually pretty good, and now replacing Shelley with Boogaard.

Why?

Its ALL NOTHING. none of it made any sense. none. I cant remember what Orr got, but im sure its less than Boogaard got, and it wouldve saved all of that hassle.

and getting rid of Betts? why? now two of the Rangers better 4th liners from the past 2 seasons, Betts and Shelley are Flyers. unreal.

But talking about all that is insane anyway, because its the 4th line. how about improving the first two lines Sather? They sucked last year.

Ill say it again and again, Sather is a senile, deaf, dumb and blind, out of touch, arrogant asshole, that makes it REALLY REALLY difficult to be a Ranger fan.

He a laughing stock in the league.

Until he is gone, the Rangers are going nowhere.

Anyone that has followed this knows it, and those that dont are fooling themselves.

Fire Sather!! (i have to say it, even tho i know itll never happen)

I am supposed to be excited about this team? As it stands now we are in the hunt for the #1 draft pick for 2011. We need a solid backup to handle 20 games to give Henrik a rest, so we turn to x Flyer and x NYI-LMAO. We need secondary goal scorers and we turn to Boogaard who scored 5 yrs ago and is basically a part time player at 1.6M. With all the solid Dmen going to the Atlantic Div. How does Pitt spend 45M on two Dmen with both Crosby and Malkin on the books? How does the NJD add two solid D men or how does cash strapped Philly add to their D. And we still remain with R&R - no buyers and Dru -who we are stuck with till the end of his career. We add to the roster with clowns like EC as a 1st line center, a 35yr old 1st line winger in Prospal and leave no room for rookies to make the team. If we are not headed for a disaster-I'm listening.

getting the 1st or top 5 pick is hardly a disaster. a disaster is the same old same old and getting 10th or 15th pick.

i just don't like the boogaard deal in $ or yrs. we were set up to have most contracts end in 2 yrs (rozy drury avery, and others in 1 yr like voros and brash) and then sather goes and matches reddens length of deal. starting to kill our hope for even 4 yrs out.

i've already seen people commenting "well we can buy him out or send him down if it doesn't work out" pretty sad already that we're planning for that and the guy hasn't played one game. and i'm saying that from the perspective that the contract is so bad the people who are writing that are not wrong. but then why sign that deal. too much in yrs and $.

Agree- disaster has different degrees of viewership. I was looking at the results of a team who is about to play a season in the NHL with this roster. The crowning moment will come when we can secure the top pick. Which is sad because we are still stuck with the big three for the remainder of their contracts.

Hey, let's not get too worked up over Boogard. If this years "bad contract" is only 4 years & 6.5 million for a 28 year old I'll take it.

rick - the big 3 - two of them have only 2 yrs left so its not like its forever. the other will certainly not be a ranger his last 2 yrs either. so you make it sound like its forever.

the failing of this team under sather has a lot more than the big 3 to blame. sather here 10 yrs those guys here 2 or 3. sather 2 playoff series wins and not once having home ice advantage in those 10 yrs.

so you can choose to blame the big 3. i choose to blame sather/dolan and the abysmal drafting record. latest example being sanguinetti. if we had a better draft record (see jessiman and all the guys we pased on as exhibit a) the big three would not even be here. our failure is at the draft table. holding out hope for last 2-3 yrs but before that drafting was horrendous.

Agree totally that Slats has been the problem and that Dolan has no clue in the art of running a business. That still does not dismiss the play of Dru-Redden and to a lesser extent Rozi and not living up to their contracts. That is what we are talking about-not the players per se but the performance compared to what we are getting in return. You mention only 2 yrs left in regards to Dru and Rozi- but that just leaves two years for the NYR's to find players who are capable of playing with Gaborik because he only has two yrs left after they leave. Once the cap is freed up to find decent players and the necessary chemistry plus new coaches and the inherent philosophy changes that the club will go through. Those two years could mean nothing in terms of competing. Not to mention that it usually takes two years for a prospect entering the NHL to get his feet wet and get his productivity in gear. The way I look at it - these only two years prolongs the necessary changes further down the road.

again disagree rick

if they wanted to make a play for kovy they could if he'd settle for 8-9 mm per yr. put redden in minors, not signing boogaard, trading brash plus say a 2nd rd pick (well worth it to find the room for kovy). so the team is not using options available to bring in the bookend superstar.

and again we're in this mess because of yrs and yrs of ineptness at the draft table. if and its a big if - our fortunes have turned around in last 2-3 yrs draft - that will be the reason for a turnaround, time will tell as its too early to judge the last 3 yrs drafts.

so i blame sather and dolan completely and fully
