Kovalchuk, Gagne, Girardi & More

Sorry for the lack of updates. Between the Mets game yesterday (worst game ever) and my wife having to go to a bridal shower this morning, not much time for the blog so here's what I've missed...

- Devils have offered Kovalchuk a 17 year deal. (NY Post)

- Larry Brooks says the Rangers need Kovalchuk. He also expects the Rangers to make a run at Simon Gagne if they don't land Kovalchuk. Finally Brooks says he'll be surprised if the opening night d-lineup doesn't consist of Marc Staal, Girardi, Michael Del Zotto, Michal Rozsival, Ryan McDonagh and Steve Eminger. (NY Post)

- Rick Carpiniello is on the fence when it comes to Kovalchuk. (Rangers Report)

- Getting to Know Dan Girardi. (The Hockey News)

- Trade Proposal: A new Coliseum for Wade Redden. (Puck Daddy at the bottom of the post)

I think that Brooks was a little off base when suggesting that the NYR's were interested in Kovy. Maybe publicity wise Slats kept his nose in the loop and wisely so cause you never know what will eventually happen. But in all sincerity there was never a strong interest. However looking at Gagne, that might be a nice pickup. Granted the health issues are somewhat of a concern but the contract is good for one more year and what we don't know health wise now we would know eventually. His skill set is 2nd tier and 5+M is not out of the norm for those assets. Would be a good fit, second only to getting a #1 center.
