Update, 12:02 p.m.:
ESPN reports he's re-signing with the Devils.

...a bit of a shocker as all indications seemed to point to LA.

...can't wait for Avery to get under this guy's skin six times this season.

what decision is to be made? obviously the kings are the most sensible choice but all along they didnt want to compromise their future as far as signing guys like Doughty. if kovy chooses LA its going to be on their terms

No, and it's upsetting that you even made a post for that. Hate stupid thoughts and suggestions getting tossed around. There's 0 chance he's a Ranger and at this point, who wants the primadonna?

i would take him..players mature and play differently in different situations...who really knows? i mean, if its us waiving redden and being able to resign staal and then sign kovalchuk..why not? kovy is a huge upgrade over our so called dman..

and ya ya i know its unlikely redden or rosi are moved or waived..but i keep my fingers crossed.

although it seems redds is on the way down to hartford...so im all for kovy..for 7.5-8 a year..

You can't say there's 0 chance he signs with the Rangers unless Eklund reports "Kovalchuk to Rangers Done Deal" e4. Then I'd say there's o chance.

Anonymous (please use a name, especially if you're going to criticize), there has been much talk on the blog about Kovalchuk and a few readers feel that the longer it dragged on the more of a chance he'd come here. So my comment was more just adding to that conversation than anything.

I'm with you, though, that he's not coming to NY. Sorry if I upset you.

I'm so glad the Kovalchuk discussion is now over. NEXT!

If Kovalchuk really did sign a 17 year contract as rumors suggest, the Devils have made a brilliant move.

I think this will end up being good for the rangers. The devils will have to dump so much depth to make this happen. It's the same with the flyers next year. Plus I think he's going to have a tougher time in the Atlantic (the toughest division) because everyone knows that this guy gets rattled easy.

devils made a good move? a giant cap hit for a player who has done zippo in the playoffs? I hope they signed him for 17yrs, I hope big Lou is finally losing his marbles.

Doesn't signing Kovalchuk put the Devils in cap trouble?

Kevin DeLury said...

wonder, yes it does. They are going to have a tough decision when Parise becomes an RFA next year.

wonderin said...

Thanks Kevin but if the devils have only 4 million left in cap space today, how can they sign Kovy for 10 million tomorrow? I guess I'm not up on such things as I could be...don't see how they are not in cap trouble THIS year...

teams can go over the cap by 10% during the summer. they have moves to make between now and start of season to be in season cap compliant

What LIJoe said.

wonderin said...

Thanks guys...but that's my point...devils must make move this year to be cap compliant at start of season...what might that be?

pick 1 or 2 of these guys
to ahl or traded possibly with draft pick sweetener like lou l did 1 time to sj.

rolston
zubrus
langenbrunner
pandolfo (i though was bought out?)
white
salvador

thats lous problem but finding the room will be well worth it to get kovy there

@Russostrib: Star Trib source on Kovalchuk contract: Goes 6, 6, 5 years of 11.5, 10.5, 8.5, 6.5, 3.5, then 750, 550, 550, 550, 550, 550. AAV: 6 mill

boy did they cheat the cap like others have done

wonderin said...

Have to see what the cap geek does with this one...and how the devils rid themselves of 6 mil by October...pay attention rangers...redden makes about that much, doesn't he ?

Fantastic signing by the Devils. Wish Sather had the brains to pull something like that off. Kovalchuk would have looked great as a Ranger at that cap hit.
