Rangers Agree to Terms With Girardi (Updated)

Update, 1:30 p.m.:
According to CapGeek, after the Girardi signing the Rangers have just over $4.5 million left under the cap. That number includes Brashear and Voros.

...not much room to sign Staal. So much for bringing in another scoring winger. Unless signing MZA was that move.

Update, 1:01 p.m.:
Larry Brooks at the New York Post tweets that the Girardi deal is a fair one and so would a six-year, $4.5 million per contract for Staal.

Updated, 12:33 p.m.:

Don't know if any of my ace pals reported this yet: FanHouse has Dan Girardi's Rangers deal at four years and $13.3 millionless than a minute ago via web

...if true, that's about $1.3 million too expensive. Comes out to $3.325 million per.

...Staal is going to be looking for at least $4.5 million per now.

Original Post:
Newyorkrangers.com reports the Rangers have agreed to terms with defenseman Dan Girardi on a new contract.

No details on the contract were given.

...great to see Girardi back in the fold as despite the Carcillo/Gaborik incident last year he is a very important part of the Rangers blueline.

...interested in the terms. I'll post them as soon as they are available.

...hopefully Staal is not far behind.

As long as the avg per year is under $3M I think it will be a great signing. Another step closer to burying Redden in Hartford. We need a few young D men (McD, Gilroy and one other) to step up!!

I fully agree with you, TRL. Anything under $3MM I will take, still holding out for under $2.75 though.

With both side avoiding arbitration you figure someone caved. Let's hope for cap purposes it was Girardi.

At a cost below $3M per year he is not only a very valuable asset on the ice (assuming steady performance) but he is also a valuable asset in the trading arena in the unfortunate event that we need to deal him (either in a firesale scenario or as part of a cost to bring in an high impact player)

Good signing. As long as it is not to the terms of R&R. A Dman with 20 min/24 pts. with one hiccup, no problem.

I heard there was a signing clause in his contract that forces him to attend a week of Boogie's fighting camp.

I think this is a VERY fair deal for a top 4 dman who is durable (280 straight games) 6th in the NHL in blocked shots, second on the rangers in hits, and logged 21 mins+ per game.

This brings him to 30 years old, avoiding UFA status until then. In 2 years this will really look like a bargain with the inflation salaries for above average defensemen is going through.

LOL Jack.

this is not good news. slats overpaid for an average defensive D with no heart. ya, youre right kevin. this is gonna move staals salary way to high. 3.3 a year. wow.

this is NOT good news.

I think people are placing way too much stock in the Gabby-Carcillo incident. It was a mistake, one that i'd be shocked ever happened again. No heart is a huge stretch.

Plus, this contract is very tradeable in the future if need be.

I'm on board with this one. Again it may be a bit too high, but not enough to be a deal breaker. I think Girardi also brings an underrated intangible to the table in the consistency that he is a homegrown player. The annual deck reshuffling has not done well for us because chemistry sometimes takes longer than a few games to develop (I'm lookin' at you, Torts). Plus the whole Carcillo thing was a wake up call for him, he proved that in the last game of the season. I like the player who learns from his mistakes (I'm lookin' at you, Redden). Plus until some bigger contracts go away, one way or another, an extra 700k/year for a homegrown, 26 year old d-man just isn't that big of a deal.

I was looking for about $3 million per year so $300,000 isn't all that much. But again Sather is overpaying. Yes Girardi is a huge asset to the Rangers and I feel he learned his lesson from the Carcillo incident but $300,000 here $600,000 with Boogaard now this contract drives up Staal's price.

So now you're looking at over $1 million that Sather could be using to help sweeten the pot for a scoring winger. Frolov?

I just find it hard to believe Slats even thinks about the cap when negotiating.

Good point made by one of my tweeps. No way the arbitrator gives Girardi $3.325 per.

You guys who think this is overpayment are wrong. This is the nature of free agency.

He filed for arbitration. If they didn't sign him, the arbitration court would've given him a one year deal and then he would have been an UNRESTRICTED free agent next summer. Then, the Rangers would have to wildly overpay him or risk losing him for nothing.

3.3 Mill is totally fair for a young top 4 D. And I agree with Chris, saying he has no heart is a huge stretch. If Torts would clarify roles a little better, these guys wouldn't be over-thinking moments like Gabby-Carcillo.

On a side note: It is going to be pretty cool down the road when our d-core is Staal/Girardi/MDZ/Mcdonaugh/Pashmin/Gilroy/Mcilrath. It's closer & more attainable then we may think. Drury & Rozival are UFA's the same year we go through this with MDZ.

James good point on avoiding UFA and again similar to Boogaard not a huge overpayment. But like I said earlier a littler here and a little there starts to add up.

He got exactly what he deserved!!! not overpaid at all!!!

Giaradi and Staal have been our Top Defensive pairthe past 2 seasons...they are always matched up against the teams best line and often shut them down!!!

Great job by Sather!!!!! ( did I really just say that)

Should note capgeek doesn't include the summer cushion that we can use before sending down rissmiller and co. after training camp.
