Rangers Speak to Ponikarovsky's Agent

Inside Pittsburgh Sports tweets...

#NHL Buzz: #Rangers have spoken with Rich Curran the agent for Alexei Ponikarovsky but are pushing forward in talks with Alexander Frolov.less than a minute ago via web

Ponikarovsky had 21g and 29a splitting time between the Maple Leafs and Penguins last season.

...the only thing bringing in Ponikarovsky does is give one less chance for a young player such as Grachev to make the team. The Rangers are full of 15-20 goal scorers. I don't need another.

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes says that the Rangers may have a tough time signing Frolov as the Kings will have much more money to offer after losing out on both Kovalchuk and Gagne.

Agree that we are lacking a decent goal scorer to compliment Gabby but when you consider how this team is sooo ladden contract wise with unproductive contracts. Its a wonder that we are able to have a skillset that can produce in the 20 goal areas.
It will be hard to add a decent goal scorer to the pact with only 4+M cap space and Staal still unsigned.

Alexei Ponikarovsky, a Russian with some size, is a little bit like Grachev with some years and experience under his belt (though I hope Grachev will produce more with some years and experience under his belt), but I'm not sure he's that goal scorer we're missing.
I'd love to see Zaccarello-Aasen put up some points for us this year. And as everybody has pointed out at one time or another, our guys gotta get better, especially: Drury, Dubinsky, Callahan, and Anisimov; and we need more from Christensen, Avery, and really everybody else while we're at it.

In any case, I appreciate the organization looking around for someone that might help this team. I just hope they're careful where they spend their money.

This is thrown out there to get the rumors going, rangers are not going to sign ponikarovsky, I could see them making a push for frolov and even that is being blown out of proportion, I'm sure a lot of teams have thought about or even gone after frolov. Rangers are stuck with what they have

I'd buy a Rangers Zaccarello-Aasen jersey-t-shirt solely on the YouTube clips I've seen of him. I'm so hyped for this guy to make road-cones out of D-men.

Enough already with the lack of scoring! Look at the stats for the Rangers and the Devils last season, they are pretty much identical...1 top scorer, 2 guys at or above 20 goals, and a bunch in the single digit and teens. The difference in the standings came from the +/-. Devils over 90 as a team, Rangers at -11 as a team. Some additional scoring would be a nice thing, but better defensive play in front of Henrik is the key. They're not going to be the Caps but they can certaily be on par with the Devils, Sabres, and Penguins, especially since their D now has some great experience under their belts. If they just play as a team, the rest will come!

So the Rangers are supposed to win games 1-0, 2-1? Ugh...I disagree with you. The Rangers were in the top ten of Goals Against last year, meaning about 20 teams had more goals against.

Don't forget about how frustrating it was last season when the Rangers lost by ONE goal — they barely made it to any shootouts to tie it, let alone a clutch goal to tie/win.

Please don't compare this team to the Devil's defense first approach (which I think is waning anyway.

Jess from Prospect Park believes Grachev to be at least two years away and from what little I have seen of him, I would tend to agree.

That being said, Poni is a disaster. He couldn't do anything with Crosby, what makes us think he can be effective with Dubinsky (or Christensen)?

Scotty, while that may be true about Grachev if the Rangers are going to be dedicated to developing youth why not let him learn up here. This team isn't doing big things this season so get him some big league experience so he's that much better in two years.

john there is no chance we can be on par with pitt this yr unless some of the pens best players get injured for long periods of time.

there is a good chance we'll be battling the isles for the cellar in the division. but at least we'll get a better pick for our troubles
