Because it says special announcement I would think it's more of a pr event type thing rather than a signing.

Yeah, def a PR announcement... like opening-game bus ride around the Garden. Meh.

What I wouldn't give to meet Steve Eminger @@ <--- sarcastic eyeroll.

I have it from an inside source that today's special announcement will endear Glen Sather into the hearts and minds of Rangers fans across the globe.

First he will admit it was a mistake to sign Wade Redden to such a huge contract when no one else was really fighting for his services. Then he will banish him to Hartford, freeing up precious cap space.

With that space, he will tell us, the Rangers are signing Staal to a 6-year contract.

Once all of this information sinks in, he will tell us how Chris Drury approached him and offered to re-structure his contract to match his actual worth. With Drury now making the veteran's minimum, the team will be free to sign Kovalchuck who comes to the Rangers at a discount because he "wants to help Ranger fans believe in the Russian offensive hockey stars and forget about their time with Bure, Kovalev, and Zherdev."

Can't wait!

"wants to help Ranger fans believe in the Russian offensive hockey stars and forget about their time with Bure, Kovalev, and Zherdev."

Hmm...Bure and Kovalev are some of my favorite hockey players of all time. I've always believed in them.

You have? I guess we differ. I wanted to believe in Kovalev, and he'd tease me with flashes, but I think it's fair to say he was a better player off the Rangers than on the Rangers.

as for bure, the 20 points in 12 games after we traded for him in 2001-2002 sure was nice. but then he only gave us 39 games the next season before his knee ended his year.

So I wasn't saying the players weren't good. I'm saying they didn't live up to their billing on the Rangers.

To announce a signing like this would be quite strange, even one as important as Staal. Lets hope it at least involves the roster, but I doubt it too.

Kevin DeLury said...

Anonymous (please use a name) that would be cool. been looking forward to that.

Evantonio, I know your post is meant to be tongue in cheek, but should note if you're holding it against Drury for not doing just that, the CBA actually prohibits restructuring existing contracts.

drury can nor be restrutured. and he;s worth more than minimum come on now. 1st 2 yrs here between 20-25 goals, played on olympics this yr.

Correct. The announcement is about their new third jersey. It will say "New York" diagonally instead of "Rangers."

@Jack: I agree

God do I hope I am wrong but ... If this is the way that MSG is going to be operating... I would suggest that the name Rangers is disappearing from the jersey so they can put sponsorship on it... a la the Liberty.

They used a similar messaging tactic... watch the uniforms are going to have the ugly logo of some company on it.
