Rangers Very Interested in Frolov

Laurie Carr at Beyond the Blueshirts tweets this quote from Alexander Frolov's agent Sergei Isakov which was published at Sportsdaily.ru...

"The #NYR have also showed great interest in Frolov. It's quite possible that Sasha will continue his career in NY."

Frolov had 19g, 32a last season for the Kings. Before last year he had scored over 30 goals two of three previous years ('06-'07 & '08-'09).

...i have read in a few places that Frolov is looking for $5 million per, which the Rangers cannot afford unless as with every other move we've discussed this offseason Sather sends Redden down to Hartford.

...i think Frolov would be a great pickup at $3-$3.5 million per.

I'll be his fan if he signs for the right price. I think he could bring some "jam" (I hate that phrase!) to the team.

Could be good, like Jack says, "for the right price." Got to be somewhat interested in this guy, he's got decent size and has demonstrated a scoring touch. On the other hand, a winger is not necessarily a top priority unless they can put up some numbers; we would certainly want him back up toward 30 goals, but can he find the game here to do it?
What was the reason for his drop in production last year?

I like the skill set- just not sure how he fits into the team. If on the 1st unit, how does that translate to the defensive end of the zone where neither Gaborik or Frolov have a good rep for defensive play. They would basically have to outscore the opp in order to be effective.
Not to sure of the character and how he fits into the recent draft picks and core players that we have in regards to their character. Frolov seems inconsistent, much like Prospal good yr bad yr type scenario. Because of that inconsistency you have to average the good and bad-good yr 5M bad year 2.5-3M. Contract amt 3.85M

FWIW:

If Frolov played the whole season with the Rangers last year he would have been second in assists with 32 (I'm not counting Jokinen) and tied for third with 19 goals.

It's not saying that much really seeing as how Prospal and Gaborik were the only steady contributors...but let's project if Frolov becomes Ranger...he'd easily be in the top three in scoring.

No matter what if he is signed it is a definite sign of either redden being demoted or rosi or drury being traded witht he latter almost definitely not hapening so either rosi or redden gone which I'm all for and at most 3.85 mil a year

While I agree that he has the skill set to produce he also has the rep for disappearing at times. There have been games last year that you would wonder if he ever laced up the skates. The inconsistency stems from the idea that he cannot get both offensive games going at the same time. And he is not lacking for having decent players on his line. He plays a perimeter game and is unwilling at times to get his nose dirty on a consistent basis.

Frolov's 2009-10 evaluation from LAKingsInsider.com:

This season: 81 games, 19 goals, 32 assists, 26 penalty minutes, 18:26 average ice time.

The good: Very little changes in Frolov’s evaluation from year to year. When he’s good, he’s very good. Frolov’s puck-control skills are on par with the NHL’s best, and his immense two-way skills allow him to contribute offensively but still play a key role in a “shutdown line” role or as part of a penalty-kill unit. Frolov was particularly dynamic coming out of the Olympic break in early March, when he had three goals and six assists in six games.

The bad: Frolov’s season hit a low point early, when Terry Murray benched him from an October game in Dallas and publicly called him out for a perceived lack of effort and interest. The situation seemed to improve after that, but the fact that the word “enigma” has been attached to Frolov for several years is no accident or mistake. His tendency to dominate a stretch of games, and then disappear from a stretch of games — or vice versa — is still hard to figure, after all these years.

Going forward: Frolov is the Kings’ most significant unrestricted free agent this summer. Murray said he would welcome Frolov’s return, and Frolov seems to enjoy playing in Los Angeles, but will there be a fit? It might depend on the Kings’ ability/interest in attracting another top forward, and it almost certainly will depend on how much of a raise Frolov is seeking. With Russian players, the KHL can never be ruled out as a possibility also.

I see a Zherdev/Tortarella relationship if the rangers signed Frolov.

robert

drury has complete no movement clause which precludes him being traded without his permission. he's not about to agree now might after season with only 1 yr left at that point
