Why Can't You Be More Like Steinbrenner?

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes has this quote from Charles Dolan on the passing of George Steinbrenner...

"George Steinbrenner and I share Cleveland as our original home town and I remember coincidentally being across an airplane aisle from George as he flew to New York in 1973 to complete his purchase of the New York Yankees. We have watched with admiration as George went on to become one of the great New Yorkers of all time. George was an incomparable presence, not only in baseball but in all of sports and all of us at Cablevision and MSG extend our deepest sympathies to his family, his beloved Yankees and his many friends and fans everywhere."

...as a Mets fan I'm obviously not as shaken by the loss of "The Boss" as Yankee fans are. But seeing Dolan comment on his passing has me so angry that he has not been able to sniff the same success as Steinbrenner while owning a team in the same amazing city and having almost identical access to unlimited funds (this is more pre cap criticism, but Steinbrenner would have found the a way to keep the Yankees on top with a salary cap also).

...maybe Dolan should have chatted up Steinbrenner a little bit more on that flight from Cleveland.

Steinbrenner and Dolan are different breeds. While Steinbrenner cared about winning, Dolan only cares about $$$.

The difference, to me, between the Dolans and the Steinbrenners is that once The Boss bought the Yankees, they always appeared to be his main concern. Sure he still had his shipping business and other dealings, but he never seemed to put them ahead of the Yankees. With the Dolans, you wonder where their allegiences lie...Cablevision, Knicks, Rangers or just making all the money they can. Until the Dolan family shows a true committment to being true champions in everything they do, the Rangers will continue to wallow in mediocrity, the Knicks will perpetually be passed over by the Lebrons of the world and Cablevision will continue to be involved in one pissing match after another. A good boss can't demand respect, he must earn it. That's something that George finally learned, but still escapes the Dolans.

Evan, and that's the said thing. After some early hiccups, Steinbrenner was the toast of the town. I can't for the life of me imagine how another owner in New York could see that and not want to emulate it.

Ranger fans are lucky the Knicks didn't get LeBron. You think Dolan doesn't care about the Rangers now?

You have to realize that George Steinbrenner was probably the best GM in all of sports. By comparing Dolan to Steinbrenner, is like comparing Callahan to Gretzky. There's only one great one.

I don't think Dolan cares any more or less about the Rangers right now than he did before the Lebron mess. Even if he decided to take his $120 million and hand it all to the Rangers, who are they going to spend it on? Kovalchuk is the only top tier free agent left and if Sather can fit him under the cap, along with re-signing Staal, I will be highly impressed.

very interesting man, i'll give that much... I'm a mets fan too so it's not that big of a deal, but he was a great owner. Dolan's problem is his loyalty to the wrong people. Isiah Tomas meet Glen Sather...

HAHAHA!!! Great point Ivan on the Isiah and Sather thing. More seriously, how does he overlook the $$$$$ possibilities after actually winning a championship?? You'd think winning is priority number one!!

Ivan nAiled it!!!!

I'm a yankees fan.... The thing Dolan and Steinbrenner has in common was money.... They were both committed to spending money on players to win!!!

Before the salary cap the rangers spent the most money in the league as far as salaries....much like the Yankees do now..... The difference is the people who are hired to make the personell decisions....

The Yankees thru the 90's and today have a bunch of home grown talent mixed with the best free agents on the market that are in their prime and produce...

The 97-07 rangers are like the 80's Yankees, over priced and over the hill free agents that surrounded what little home grown talent we had.... The rangers also morgagwd the future to win a Cup... (weight and amines come to mind)

I think finally the Rangers are developing a good young core and hopfully they will figure out the NHL free agent agent market (when they get the cap room agin in 2 years) to surround the core!!!!

RIP Mr Steinbrenner and thank you for making the Yankees the best franchise in sports!!!!

Oh... Let's go Rangers!!!

Exactly... Dolan wants to win too, he is just too damn loyal where as Steinbrenner fired people left and right haha... gotta love that about him... "Your fired! , um wait I change my mind..." Since Dolan doesn't drink the same Kool-Aid as George, we will have to hope our GM can get his act together... Please Glenn... If your are reading this... We promise to love you when you do... I swear... We just wanna win...

Dan, while we all have our criticisms of the Dolan. Hoping for his death, joking or not, isn't cool. Don't want to have to start deleting posts, but will if I have to.

To be fair, that comment was made by Charles Dolan, not James Dolan who has control over MSG properties including the Rangers and Knicks.

Also, Steinbrenner had the luxury of no cap space in contrast to the NBA and NHL. Steinbrenner was also not immuned to signing aging, washed up players to the Yankees. Perhaps we should thank his GMs as well. People seem to forget the pre-1996 Yankees before everyone jumped on the bandwagon.

Lastly, I think Charles Dolan's gesture was meant in good faith. It would have been more rude to not saying anything at all considering Cablevision and the YES network have not always had a friendly relationship.

as c pointed out the stmt was from charles dolan who is the guy that made all the dolan money by building the cablevision expire. he is a good businessman, his son james is not.

Thanks for the heads-up, I actually realized that after posting it. Still it's Charles' $ and he can step in at anytime and chooses not to.

To be committed to winning you surround yourself with the smartest people in the business. I would not be amiss in suggesting that Slats and Thomas are a joke in their profession. Is there any wonder that the James's of the world don't court NY teams as a prime time visit. They instead make their visit after the flame has gone out.

How quick we are to forget that Steinbrenner is largely responsible for the inflation of player contracts and skyrocketing costs for fans. Before him, sports were profitable. But now sports siphon unprecedented amounts of money from working families to a few ultra-rich elite.
Let's also not forget that George Steinbrenner died a convicted felon. How quickly our perception of character changes with winning a few championships.
