Exelby Will Be Going Like His Job & Future Depends on It (Updated)

Update, 4:50 p.m.:
Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants has more on Semenov.

Original Post:
Jesse Spector at the Blueshirts Blog has this quote from tryout invitee Garnet Exelby on what Ranger fans should expect from him in camp...

"I'm playing for keeps. That's pretty much the only way I can look at it. As soon as we get into it, I'm going to be going like my job and future depends on it, and I think it does."

...Exelby will be an interesting player to watch in camp. You know he's going to go all out because his future DOES depend on it, plus he brings that toughness the Rangers are lacking on the blueline.

Spector also has quotes from Dan Girardi and Alexei Semenov.

I feel like its nice to not have hollweg on the team anymore and that could be severely screwed up if he makes the team

honestly, why are they bothering? extra motivation for other players? he better not injure anyone

That Hollweg comment is pretty random.

Problem with these old timers, some younger ones too, is they play hard to make the team and then they don't play hard the rest of the season.

I want players who get better and play harder as the season progresses. Who cares who has a good camp. It's no indication of what they are capable of.

Boyle is another one you can lump in that category. I could care less if he has a good camp because I know after a month of hockey he will be the same lumbering waste of money he was last year.

i would so much rather go through the peaks and valleys of a staal del zotto mcdonough roszival girardi and gilroy than exelby and older vets

Sort of off topic, where do you guys think TSN.ca will put the rangers in thier 30 teams in 30 days? They have to be at least
17th or higher with colorado being todays team. Its weird not reading that the rangers will bring up the rear, especially from such a big name website.

I actually had Hollweg in mind when I made my first comment as well.

Its not that random of a comment, Kevin. They are the same kind of player. Both dirtbags that take stupid, completely unnecessary penalties.

Chris, I misread the comment when Matty Boy wrote "if he makes the team" I thought he was talking about Hollweg not Exelby. My bad.

I want to say Renney put Hollweg/Orr on the ice the last few minutes of a crucial playoff game the last time Renney made it to the playoffs. The other team scored, Rangers lost. Bonehead players, dumb coaching move.

I always wonder, why is that when a "tough" player comes to the Rangers the fans throw the goon or dirtbag term around so much, like they're little kids seeing a sex magazine for the first time? Why can't it be like we got a tough player, with a resume of knocking people on their asses, let's roll? Brashear comes in, "oh he's a goon, I don't want him". Not "oh, we got Brahsear, whatever, he's a ranger, let it be."

Look at Boogard. I mean we have if not the toughest, one of the toughest enforcers in the league and people are bitching about his contract. granted, he got a lot for a guy who scored three goals in three years - but that's not why you give a guy of is physicality that type of cash. What if the Flyers offered him that contract or a little over what he should be making as an enforcer and he signs. Then you have Shelly and Boogard, plus a very good goal scoring team.

People can say this is not 70's hockey, but there's nothing like having toughness on your team. And if guys like Gab, Fro, AA, a Grachev, Stephen, Kennedy, MZA, MDZ come through with scoring, you will have a mixture of scoring and toughness.

IMO, there was no better feeling of seeing guys like shelly and Prust in that lineup when we were pursuing a playoff birth. I remember Shelly smacking his gum like nothing mattered during the intermission of the Rangers and Flyers final game. It's that type of swagger and toughness he displayed during the game that eases a fans mind compared to seeing the lost, timid expressions of the rangers players in previous years during the playoffs. If you get a Exelby, a Semenov, Fedotenko, why not? How bad can we be with them? If they don't perform during the season, give them the boot - that simple.

And Exelby is no Hollweg. Given, he may take one or two penalties like many enforcers, but when he's on he connects with some bone jarring hits.

Agree- there is still no toughness on the D. Add Exelby to the mix and the hitting can become contagious. If Boogaard and Prust and maybe even Avery have your back under certain situations, as a team you will play tougher and more competitively. Gilroy didn't impress me and Eminger definetely does not-if Exelby can compete and win a spot against either one, than I say he deserves the roster spot.

“That’s what New York City’s all about, is living up to expectations and your pay grade,” Girardi said. “I got a pay increase, so there’s going to be a lot more responsibility on myself to do a little more out there, maybe produce a few more points and maybe play a couple more minutes every night. You expect that with a new deal, and you want to make sure you’re not letting (the fans) down, letting your teammates down or letting New York City down.”

THIS IS WHY I LIKE GIRARDI!
I feel like I've been waiting my whole life, or at least since 1994, to hear any athlete, especially a Ranger say this. This is a real leadership type of quote.

Master Chef D - Girardi has been a solid player for this team - the whole Carcillo-Gaborik nonsense non-withstanding - for the last two years. I admire his talk AND playing style.

And how is Hollweg compared to anything resembling an NHL player? How the frig did he even come up?

Not at all LI Joe. I'm just saying, whether you like Brashear or not, tough guys are tough guys. I would have Brashear on my side any time. Nobody in Ranger land like him because he's a "goon". He's a fourth line player, what do expect from him? But I tell you one thing, when the Ranger's first line sucked, Brashear and Boyle's line saw ice time because they played hard - it's just that Torts keep mixing and matching and taking away time from guys who didn't deserve it like Brash. that's what everyone else don't see because they hated him from the jump.

And this is life, you couldn't have seen everything.
